Africans take over Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans

When the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture started last weekend in New Orleans, it was precisely what it has always been: a homecoming, a cultural pilgrimage, a sanctuary of Southern-rooted Black joy. But for many attendees, in a sea of vibrant Blackness, a familiar tension made its way to the surface. Festivalgoers took to social media to voice concerns about a myriad of production issues, including what felt like an erosion of the festival’s Black American focus. The presence of more pan-African inclusion left some feeling sidelined in a space historically cultivated by and for Black Americans, particularly descendants of slavery in the American South.

Troi Torain aka STAR is a multimedia personality whose career has spanned the arenas of radio, television and the world-wide web. Considered a radio pioneer by many, Torain's personal brand STAR & BUC WILD has set precedents in the urban landscape. STAR made the national stage on MTV in 1999 (Beat Suite) but it was his radio shows on New York's Hot 97 and Power 105 that launched him into super stardom.
