Will I Finally Capture the Osprey Shot I've Always Wanted… and This Time, In Focus?

One of my first wildlife photos ever was of an osprey, captured back in 2012 with my very first DSLR, a Nikon D3100 paired with the standard kit telephoto lens. At the time, I was living in Lutsel K’e, a remote community in the Northwest Territories, and there happened to be a nest right near the main road. This was well before I was into photography.

Since moving back to Nova Scotia, I’ve tried photographing ospreys again. On one outing, I managed a much nicer shot. The pose was perfect and the composition strong, but the light was fading fast. I caught the moment I had hoped for, just not the focus.

In this video, I head out again, determined to capture that same powerful pose, this time with everything in sharp focus. It took two outings and a great deal of patience, but I finally got the shot. As a bonus, the osprey had a fish in its talons.

As much as I enjoy the challenge, I am not sure I have the patience to capture the classic osprey dive mid-hunt. Then again, never say never.
