I Broke My Lens Chasing This Shot

I broke my 24–120 lens. The real question is… was the shot worth it, and can I fix it?
Every trip to the Valley, I pass the wind turbines in St. Croix and think about the abstract possibilities they could create in a photograph. I actually attempted this concept years ago, but the results never quite matched the vision I had in my head. This time, I wanted to revisit the idea and push it further. While setting up, I also sent the drone up for some footage as I chatted with the owner of the land leased for the turbines.

I was working on my second composition when disaster struck.

A sudden gust of wind caught my tripod just as I was setting up the vlog camera. I saw it begin to topple and sprinted toward it… but I wasn’t fast enough.

After assessing the damage, it was clear things could have been much worse, though definitely better too. The lens still seemed usable, aside from some issues at the wider end, so I decided not to let the day end there.

I headed back to Halls Falls, only a short drive away. The water flow was the heaviest I’d ever seen. Unlike my last visit, when snow limited my photography shoot. Despite the earlier mishap, I was finally able to capture the images I had envisioned at these falls.

Then came the next challenge: figuring out what, if anything, could be done to save my lens.
