How I built a floating van table #shorts

I built a floating fold down table unit for my tiny camper van conversion, with built-in secret storage and a battery - let me show you how I did it! It's a space saving wall mounted design that was cheap to make and has been a game-changer for my van build. 🚐

Early on in my van build I created a simple but very basic drop leaf table that hung from the side of the van.

Having used this ‘prototype’ for a while, I wanted something bigger, smarter, sturdier, and with storage options and a built in battery, to maximise use of the space.

I knew that I wanted a convertible front of the unit whichs folds down into a table, so I started by glueing two boards together to get the width I wanted.

I used furniture pine boards, as I did with my wheel arch storage box, because it’s lighter and cheaper for me to source than plywood and it came in useful sizes, meaning less cutting for me.

Whilst that dried, I moved onto the side pieces and scribed the edge of the van before cutting these out.

Moving back to the front of the table, I cut it to size and then did some drop cuts with the circular saw to cut out the part of my table that would fold down. I finished the corners off with a jigsaw and lots of sanding!

I could then attach the sides to the front piece, using pocket holes, and then added a top shelf and a base to the unit.

I reattached the table I had cut out of the front piece with a long piano hinge and attached magnets and a latch to secure it and then some wires to support it.

Finally, I added a centre shelf, a cradle to hold my battery and a door to access the ports from the side, and with a sand and a few coats of varnish it was finished!

I used 5 high tensile bolts to attach the table to the factory-fitted screw threads on the walls and it’s solid as a rock!
