Darla was one of many child performers that were featured in the Our Gang series of short films, having debuted in the series in 1935. Darla played a character that also went by the name of Darla, and that character went on to become one of the series’ most iconic.

The Our Gang series of short films were also known as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach’s Rascals. The series was created by Hal Roach, and produced by his own Hal Roach Studios. Before Our Gang, Hal had been known as the man that put together the successful comedic duo of Laurel and Hardy. Our Gang proved equally successful thanks to its naturalistic comedic portrayal of neighborhood kids.

Our Gang initially started out as a series of silent short subjects in 1922 before eventually introducing sound to the equation in 1929. This marked the series’ most successful period, and Darla was introduced during it. After leaving Our Gang behind, Darla continued working in the film industry for a few years before leaving to pursue an education. From there, Darla became a modestly successful pop music singer before her tragic death at the age of only 47.

Although Darla lived a healthy and successful life, she ended up passing away from a freak accident that many feel could’ve been avoided. Many fans have held up her tragic death as proof that there is some curse amongst the former Our Gang cast members that has caused them all to die tragic deaths.
