Things to do in Big Bend National Park:

Hot Springs Loop Hike
- Distance: 1.4 mile loop
- Difficulty: Easy
- Traffic: Heavy
This gorgeous hike follows alongside a section of the Rio Grande. Not only does this hike produce stunning views, but you also get to see a large hot spring on the banks of the river as well as ancient petroglyphs and historic buildings.

Off-road on Old Maverick Road to Santa Elena Canyon
This route is 14 miles long. It’s a shortcut that saves you about 30 miles. Although it’ll probably take you around the same amount of time to trek it since you can only go 10-20 mph due to the beaten and unkept path. Maverick Road is right by the main entrance and a straight shot to the Santa Elena canyon.

Bike Lajitas Airport Trail- Loop 3
- Distance: 5.4 mile loop
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Traffic: Light
The Lajitas Trails by the Lajitas Airport in Terlingua offer a number of trails/loops for biking. The longest trail offered is 14 miles. These trails take you through the desert with views of the mountains. There is no shade so take tons of water!

Hike Window View Trail
- Distance: 5.6 miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Traffic: Heavy
This trail leads to an incredible Window, a large rock canyon cutting through the Chisos Mountains rim that allows drainage from the basin. It offers an adventurous hike through Oak Creek and ends with panoramic desert views. We opted to take the .5 mile roundtrip detour towards Oak Spring to see the gorgeous views of the desert below.

Things to Do in Big Bend State Park:

Closed Canyon Hike
- Distance: 1.4 miles
- Difficulty: Easy
- Traffic: Moderate
Great "day" hike into a narrow slot canyon similar to ones found in Utah. Be sure to check the weather prior to going as flash floods can be deadly in this area.

Kayak the Colorado Canyon in Big Bend State Park
Hours: Open Daily (Kayak tours on Tues, Thurs, Sat & Sun)
Cost: $84.00 per person (adults)
Total time: about 4 hours
Website: https://bigbendfarflung.com/

This is a fun way to explore the Rio Grande! We booked a half day tour which hosted about 20 people in single kayaks. This 2+ hour tour takes you through the Colorado Canyon on the Rio Grande.

Wilson’s Tips for Big Bend:
1. Buy the book! If you’re planning on hiking in Big Bend, we highly recommend you pick up the Hiking in Big Bend National Park, Falcon Guide. It’s loaded with tons of great information from detailed directions and trailhead information to maps and elevation gain charts.
2. Travel in a 4x4 vehicle. Many of the access points to the trailheads require a 4x4 vehicle to get through the dirt roads.
3. Explore both parks! Both Big Bend State Park and National Park both have amazing trails and beautiful sites to see.

Things to do in & around Terlingua:
1. Explore the Ghost Town. Terlingua is home to a ghost town that acquired its name after miners abandoned their homes when their mining town went bust. For the best gift shop in Terlingua visit the Terlingua Trading Company at the top of the hill. For food and beverage options try the coffee shop La Posada Milagro for espresso and don’t forget to try the famous Starlight Theater Restaurant for dinner.

2. Stop by Cotton Wood. Located a few miles outside of Big Bend National Park in Terlingua, it's by far the best option for a general store. You can find food, alcohol, toiletries, hardware, ice, firewood, any bit of camping gear you may have forgotten. You can refill your potable water containers here for just 10 cents a gal.

3. Shop at Many Stones. Many Stones is a unique rock & gift shop right up the road from Cottonwood. It’s owned by Ring Huggins and specializes in the sale of precious rocks and small succulents. Stop by even when Ring isn’t around with an honor system policy where you can slip your cash under the door to pay for your items. This is definitely a place worth pulling over for.
