Thousand Steps Beach | California | Laguna Beach

Adventure to Laguna Beach in California with us! We share a short hike to Thousand Steps Beach and beautiful views at sunset! (Just 80 miles from San Diego, California).

This video is part of a series we are calling CastAway Shorts. These Shorts will either focus on portions of our travel videos that we may not have had the opportunity to elaborate on as much as we would have liked to or as in this case highlight a small segment of our travels that wasn't long enough for a big video but we still wanted to share with you, even if only a few minutes long.

Thousand Steps Beach is located in Laguna Beach, California and is known for its long and steep decent down to the beach as well as its beautiful scenery, but fewer people know about the man made seawater pool only a short hike away. The pool is rumored to be the left over remains of a movie shoot and is technically on private property but not too difficult to reach with a little tide planning, and some mild scrambling. If you decide not to risk entering the cave and climbing the rocks on the other side you might consider swimming in the tide pool at the entrance of the cave instead. We tried it in November and it was pretty cold but super refreshing for a quick dip.

***CAUTION***
This hike should be done with hiking footwear as you will be climbing on rocks that can be very slippery. Be prepared to get wet and you MUST check the Laguna Beach Tides Table before going. This hike is NOT POSSIBLE during high tide, as the entrance to the cave is flooded and if you’re not careful you could wind up stranded on the south side of the cave if you do not return to Thousand Steps Beach before the tide comes in. It is best to go during low tide. The seawater pool is technically on private property, but I have not heard any instances of legal consequences for trespassing. Visit at your own risk. You can check the tide of the day you plan to visit here: https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Laguna-Beach/tides/latest

How to get there: You can find street parking on S. Coast Hwy near the entrance to the beach stairs at the intersection of 9th Street and S. Coast Hwy. Then take the 224 steps all the way down to the beach. There is a small public bathroom with a toilet and shower at the bottom. Once you reach the sand, head south (left) until the beach dead ends into rocks, a small tide pool and the entrance to the cave. The entrance to the cave is only a short 5 min walk and should be visible from where you start at the bottom of the stairs. If the tide is low enough you should be able to walk through the cave to get to the other side. Keep heading south along the rocks until you reach a viewpoint where you should be able to see the next beach, a lighthouse and the seawater pool. If the tide is low enough you should be able to descend carefully to the beach and walk to the seawater pool. Don’t forget to cross the cave and get back to Thousand Steps Beach before the tide comes in!
