SBD Dauntless Series Part One: The Dive Bomber in the Interwar US Navy

In the years between the world wars most of the development of the dive bomber as a type of aircraft and as a tactical role was performed by the US Navy and Marine Corps. The dive bombing attack, which was much more accurate than conventional bombing, offered the possibility of using relatively small aircraft as deadly anti-shipping strike weapons. The testing and experimentation conducted by Navy and Marine airmen resulted in a set of requirements for carrier-based naval bombers of this kind. These types of aircraft then underwent the rapid evolution characteristic of the interwar period, leading from biplanes to more modern all-metal monoplane machines. The last of the dive bombers to enter into Navy service before America's involvement in the second world war, the Douglas SBD Dauntless, would combine the improvements of the previous two decades in its design, and become arguably the most important naval strike aircraft of the war.
