South Carolina health leaders discuss measles cases

The measles virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area, and a person can be contagious four days before and after a rash begins -- meaning someone can spread the measles virus before they know they are infected.

Initial symptoms include cough, fever, and runny nose, followed about 2-4 days later by a rash that usually lasts 5-6 days. Some people can develop serious complications that include pneumonia, swelling of the brain (encephalitis), and even death. Those that are most prone to complications are children under 5 years of age, adults over the age of 20, pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system.
