Daniel Kaluuya's directorial debut, The Kitchen, cooks at the BFI London Film Festival 2023
Daniel Kaluuya attends the red carpet at the world premiere of his film, The Kitchen, which closed the BFI London Film Festival 2023 in partnership with American Express.
The Kitchen is Kaluuya and co-director Kibwe Tavares's heartfelt rally against gentrification and a celebration of family and community.
In a near-future London, Izi, a hardworking loner, is counting down the days until he can leave The Kitchen, the estate he grew up on, and move to one of the sleek luxury penthouses that are popping up all over London. But when he discovers through his job at an ecological funeral home that his ex-girlfriend has passed away, Izi finds his path colliding with that of Benji, her young son. Meanwhile, the residents of The Kitchen – the last remaining untouched social housing in the city and a hub for bustling community – fight back against those trying to destroy it. When Benji comes to The Kitchen in search of his father, Izi is forced to step out of his isolation and become a de facto guardian. But is his bond with Benji actually stronger than he wants to admit?
