Director-screenwriter Georgia Oakley, along with her cast and producer, visits the BFI Southbank to talk about Blue Jean, a stunning social realist drama following a closeted teacher in Thatcher’s Britain.

Tyneside. 1988. Jean lives a tightly compartmentalised existence. By day, she is a firm but fair PE teacher, putting secondary school students through their paces. At night, she socialises in a lesbian bar an hour away from her workplace. The looming Section 28 ruling encourages her to keep her life compartmentalised, until the arrival of a new, awkward student threatens to crumble the separate worlds Jean has built for herself. Winner of the People’s Choice award at the Venice Film Festival, this astonishing debut feature from Georgia Oakley is a delicate yet gripping inner portrait of a woman forced to confront the intricacies of her own identity. Powered by a touching and hypnotic performance from Rosy McEwen in the title role, the film feels like a precious time capsule thanks to the attention to period detail, precise music choices and beautiful, evocative 16mm photography, all while serving as a vital reminder of the lasting ramifications of Thatcherism.
