Over the past few months, especially since the start of the recent pandemic, I’ve been reflecting on what I can do to better my overall mental and physical health. If you’ve followed me for a while now, you know that I’ve always been a huge fan of bullet journals. (You can see many of my bullet journaling videos on Refinery29's YouTube channel!) Bullet journals help you to keep track and reflect on your daily habits, tasks, and goals, as well as your overall feelings and emotions. In this video, I am going to walk you through how I create my minimalist bullet journal spreads so that you can plan with me and track your own habits in your bullet journal and stay organized while doing it!

I decided to build this habit tracker after some recent health issues I've been experiencing (difficulty sleeping, migraines, etc.). I asked my doctor about these incidents, and she asked me questions like, "What did you eat that day?" "How long were you staring at your computer for?" and "How many hours of sleep did you get?" And I realized that, without properly tracking these elements of my day, there's no way I would have these answers for her. Tracking these health markers allows you to identify patterns and perhaps pinpoint the root cause of some issues.

When building a new bujo spread, I always need my bullet journal essentials with me - my brush pens, mildliner colored markers, a ruler, a regular ball point pen and my skinny black pen. This bullet journal set-up is pretty typical of the way I’ve been creating my spreads recently. I decided to go the route of a more minimal bullet journal spread this time. If you’ve ever searched for "bullet journal spreads" or "bullet journal ideas" on Pinterest (or even "bullet journal layouts" or "habit tracker ideas"), you’ll see how intricate and artistic some people’s spreads can be! I decided to keep things clean and simple this time, since the purpose of this spread is to track my health markers!

Every month, I create a habit tracking spread where I track the habits I want to do that month. This helps me reflect on my progress, or lack thereof… and thus, make the necessary changes I want to make in order to reach these personal goals. This month, I decided to track the following in my habit tracker of my 2020 bullet journal: the amount of days I exercise, if I did yoga, if I had a headache, if I drank alcohol, if I read, if I dedicated time to stretching, and if I spent time outdoors. I personally love making habit trackers like this in my bullet journal so that I can see the progress I am making to improve upon my overall physical and mental wellbeing.

I also decided to set up a screen-time habit tracker in hopes of reducing the amount of time my eyes are exposed to blue light, and thus reducing the amount of migraines I have. In the next spread, I walk you through how I built my sleep log, or sleep tracker. This spread is a pretty simple layout that you can recreate in numerous ways in your bullet journal to track all kinds of habits.

Underneath my sleep tracker, I walk you through how I created a bullet journal spread to track my energy levels each day and how my skin is doing each day. For this tracker, I made a scale from 1 to 5. The last bullet journal spread I use to keep track of my health and overall wellbeing is a meal log (aka a food intake tracker). It was important that I made this spread as simple and as minimal as possible because I needed to recreate it 4 times (one page for each week of the month).

I loved creating and using these health habit trackers this past month! Comment below if you use a bullet journal and let me know what kinds of spreads and trackers you use to track your overall health! Also let me know if you want more bullet journaling videos like this one!
