Gear for Recording Death Metal Vocals (6 Studio Hardware You Need)

Are you ready to record death metal vocals but not sure what all you need for studio gear?

Then this video is for you! I'm sharing 6 hardware pieces you need in your studio to get started. Here's what you need (and the timings of where each segment begins)...

0:47 - Mic. I'm suggesting the Shure SM7B mic as it is the culprit of death metal vocals. If this mic isn't in your budget, look for a used SM7B mic. If you need to go even lower, you can use the SM57. If you still need a cheaper mic, get two jobs!

2:08 - Mic stand and cables. Do not skimp on these! Make sure you get a mic stand that's stable and can support the mic and other gear we're about to discuss. And get high-quality cables! What you record is only going to sound as good as the weakest link.

3:33 - Filters. In the video, I recommend two types of sound filters for recording death metal vocals. A pop filter is a must. This helps with the P's and S's that can ruin your vocal track. I also recommend getting a reflection filter, especially if your room is not acoustically treated. I'm using the sE Electronics Reflexions.

4:57 - Cloudlifter C1. This is a blue little box that connects between your mic and your preamp (interface...we'll get to that next). In short, it cleans up the overall sound, enhances the quality of the recording, and removes much of the unwanted noise that can come from recording vocals.

6:26 - Preamp. Actually, in this case, I'm just using a recording interface (which contains preamps). You can go with an inexpensive interface, like the Presonus AudioBox USB. That or anything similar interface will suffice for recording death metal vocals. But if you can stretch your budget, go with a higher-end interface like the Presonus Quantum 2. This interface has better preamps and will serve you better, not just for vocals but recording in general.

8:22 - Headphones. You must have a good pair of headphones when recording death metal vocals (or any vocals). You obviously have to hear what you're singing and the music you're singing to, but more importantly, you don't want the mic picking up the sound from your studio monitors.

I hope you enjoyed my gear for recording death metal vocals and the 6 studio hardware pieces you need. As I stated in the video, I will do a separate video for the software and effects.
