Brook Trout, Moose Calling and Fire Building, Students on the Allagash

Canoe the Wild outfitted and guided this 5 day Allagash canoe trip last May for high school students from the Fort Kent and Madawaska area. This student leadership development trip was sponsored by the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation (AWWF). Students traveled by canoe, learned about the rich logging history when logs were harvested by hand and floated to the mills in the spring. Students set up camp, collected firewood, made fires with a spark, cooked over an open fire, baked desserts in a Dutch oven style cooker, learned practical knots and uses of, caught and ate brook trout and along with mastering a canoe in moving water and learning how to stand up propelling a canoe with the use of a pole. These leadership trips are primarily for students that have taken part on the AWWF sponsored 3 day and 2 night trip while in middle school. Trips are provided free of charge for northern Maine high school students through the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation.
