Wilhelm Kempff, a pianist who tackled both interpretation as well as improvisation from an early age, creating his own variations and fugues was part of his musical upbringing and it was such exercises that perhaps equipped him to become a master of so many composers. His attitude towards Beethoven was one of exploration, treating his works as fantasies that had been translated to paper. Kempff’s independent and creative approach whilst still maintaining the narrative that Beethoven intended is perhaps what makes these performances so compelling, Kempff draws out detail and modulations where other artists may have glossed over.
