The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations, Part Two (The Reconstructor Mix)

GOOD VIBRATIONS, PART TWO
by The Reconstructor

Notes:

Considering the amazing amount of re-recordings and different sections recorded for "Good Vibrations", why not turn it into one of those singles like Ray Charles' "What I'd Say", which has part one on side one and part two on side two? That's what I was attempting with this edit.

Side one remains as it was, with the extended 4:15 version of "Good Vibrations" from The Smile Sessions, with the amazing "Hum De Da" section added in. Honestly my favorite part of the song! That means we'll just need to put together something that's roughly four minutes long for the B-side.

Part two begins rather oddly, with the "Tape Rewind" section of the Sessions disc. This was most certainly not meant for release or use in any way, but when putting this together it felt like a really fun way to kick things off, and acknowledge the haphazard and costly way the song was recorded. And considering it starts with a fade-in of the outro, if you listen to it immediately after Part One, it sounds like it faded out and back in again, just like "Strawberry Fields Forever" a few months later! All I know is that it sounds fun and seems to work.

It's then followed by "Western (Part Two Continued)", the alternate version of the verse and chorus. Even though there were some more versions of the verses and many, many, many versions of the chorus, I chose this particular arrangement due to how different it is from the released version, with its glaring clarinet during the verses and its different chorus melody, much more alike to the first bridge of the released version of the chorus. That helps prevent this part two from turning merely into an instrumental version of the first side, keeping it fresh.

As in the released version, Part Two has two bridges, the first of which is the great "Inspiration: Western (Part 1)", with its fuzz bass riff and galloping sound, a nice abrupt shift from the Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus structure the song had followed so far, being the first radically new component of Part Two. It's followed by the very similar "Western (Part C)", with its very dramatic flutes, again another piece of melody that's nowhere to be seen in part one.

The song ends with "Western (Part 2 and Verse)", which is merely the outro to the alternate version of the verse and chorus we used before. We'll use it and allow it to fade out really slowly, as it's got a pretty catchy melody and is probably the one piece of the "Good Vibrations" sessions that sounds the most like the Smile material that came afterward.

The parts, for easy navigation:

1. Tape Rewind 0:00
2. Western (Part 2 Continued) 0:17
3. Inspiration: Western (Part 1) 2:00
4. Western (Part C) 2:38
5. Western (Part 2 and Verse) 3:17
