'No doubt' the drums of war are beating

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says there is no doubt the drums of war beating in the region and that the Australian people need a wakeup call.

Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo indicated the country must be prepared to send off its “warriors to fight” in a message to staff.

“It’s not clear exactly what that might mean for us but that may be a risk that a wider conflict does occur, and we should absolutely be prepared for that,” Mr Canavan told Sky News.

“I welcome Mike Pezzullo speaking frankly from his obviously well-informed position because I do think the Australian people need a wakeup call.

“We must be ready for the worst outcome.”
