Superhero Games Have a Copying Problem

Batman Arkham completely changed how superhero games are made, which sounds like it would be a great thing.

The problem is, a lot of games didn’t take the right lessons from it. Instead of building around what makes each hero unique, many games copied the surface of what they thought could be transferred from Batman to other heroes. These included combat systems, open worlds, and structure. Unfortunately, they missed part of what made Arkham so special and successful in the first place. In some ways, the Arkham formula's success may have actually backfired.

To be clear, copying ideas isn’t always a bad thing. Games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel Rivals, and others clearly take inspiration and still turn it into something great. The issue is when everything starts following the same blueprint instead of doing something new.

There are still games trying desperately to be unique. Games like Midnight Suns, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even newer ideas like Dispatch show that superhero games can be extremely unique if the developers and publishers are willing to focus on the identity of a specific hero. That focus can mean the difference between being called a "clone" and being remembered years later for changing things. That said, is it a good thing, or a bad thing, that games decided to copy Arkham?
