Patagonia on R1200GS | Ep. 4 - Riding the Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral stretches for over 1200 km, from Puerto Montt in the North, to Villa O'Highhins in the South. Most of the Northern half, from Puerto Montt to Villa Cerro Castillo, is paved. The Southern half offers you a motorcycle adventurer's dream: washboard, rugged mountain passes, jungle and, towards its very end, desolate swamps. The two halves combined make for the single most amazing road I have ever ridden on.

Cristi and I cheated a bit, because we did not enter the Carretera at its starting point, in Puerto Montt, but 150 kilometers further South, near the city of Futaleufu.

We spent one week in total on the Carretera Austral. Split by days, our ride was as follows:

- Day 1 - 301 km
- Lago Verde, Argentina - Puyuhuapi, Chile

- Day 2 - 234 km
- Puyuhuapi - Coyhaique

- Day 3 - 217 km
- Coyhaique - Puerto Río Tranquilo

- Day 4 - Break in Puerto Río Tranquilo

- Day 5 - 238 km
- Puerto Río Tranquilo - Tortel

- Day 6 - 158 km
- Ferry Crossing
- Tortel - Villa O'Higgins

- Day 7 - 115 km
- Ferry Crossing
- Villa O'Higgins - Puerto Yungay
