Of all British Leyland's weird and wonderful cars, none quite epitomise the simultaneous genius and failure as Alec Issigonis' last car - the Austin Maxi.
With its transverse engine, front-wheel drive, Hydrolastic suspension, five-speed gearbox, and five-door hatchback body style, the Maxi was ten years ahead of all the competition, providing part of the blueprint of the modern family car.
