TEXT FROM THE HOMILY

This Sunday we are really going to challenge ourselves especially with this gospel. I find this gospel the most challenging especially when it comes out, "love your enemies." but you want to know something? Jesus loves each and every one of us and he recognizes that we have our faults and our foibles. You know, when we say love our enemies you realize that we can be enemies? That we can create the situations in which people can turn to us and say, 'You're an enemy." We do that sometimes. Sometimes we pick fights with family members. We find fault with our coworkers or maybe even our neighbors or friends. And all of a sudden guess what? Now who is the enemy? You see, Jesus recognizes that we're all sinners. And that we all need to be loved and we all have our faults and our failures. You know sometimes when I hear that we want to go after someone. You know, you have a bone to pick with somebody and you're going to settle the score now. I'm going to let them know exactly what I'm feeling. I always have to ask, and what good will come out of that? What good will come out of that? Revenge? Getting back at someone? You see, Jesus started the gospel by saying, turn your cheek. Maybe sometimes instead of worrying about getting back, we should learn to forgive and let go. That's really what the heart of this is all about. Forgiveness. Sometimes we can come at someone, a coworker or maybe the neighbor and you may be really bent out of shape about something. And maybe we need to come back and revisit it after we've calmed down and after we've thought about it. To really want to turn the cheek and say, you know what go to the neighbor and say I’m sorry. Maybe that person that you yelled at in the office, to go back and say, you know what? I was a little overboard. And ask for forgiveness. Because that's what Jesus is really calling us to do today. We're all in relationships. And as much as we find maybe loving the enemy and maybe we have to love something in here. Something where we get too upset with those around us and lose our temper and lose our cool, what we need to do is love something in here and also ask for forgiveness. Today Jesus challenges us the most. And what I think is the most challenging of all the gospels that I have to face, but that's because I have to face myself. I know that I can be harsh. I can be stern or uncharitable to somebody and then I have to realize you know what? We all find ourselves in the same boat. We need to learn to forgive and truly love for it is in forgiveness that we love. So today challenge yourself by loving the enemy loving you. And recognizing that in forgiveness we all embrace Jesus. Let us stand and pray.
