TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY
The Lord be with you and with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to John. Glory to you o Lord.
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the father has sent me so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
This is a powerful reading especially as we celebrate Pentecost because this is really the night after the Lord had risen and he comes to his disciples who are fearful, they're in the upper room, they've locked the doors, they're really worried simply because they don't know what happened. Their Lord, whom they love, now is gone and they're alone and they feel that aloneness up in that upper room and yet Jesus comes in the midst of that fear, in the midst of that doubt and all that may be going on the darkness and he comes to them and he reassures them with his presence and he says, “Peace be with you.” You know folks, as we celebrate this wonderful Pentecost Sunday we find ourselves sometimes in the upper room making tough decisions, maybe making tough decisions for your family who you might have to say “I’ve got to move to a different state and find a different job.” “I might need to move to a nursing home or a care facility.” “I might have to face a difficult surgery.” And you know something? When we're up against these difficult decisions we sometimes feel a little afraid, a little unsure, and we can be up in the upper room but you know what? Jesus comes to us and through his gift of peace he breathes upon us to give us the strength to go forth, to leave the locked room, the darkness, and those worries to really face the world in a different challenge because now we hold in our hearts that gift of the holy spirit, that the Lord breathed upon each and every one of us. That holy spirit allows us to say, “I think it's time to move, I think it's time to embrace a new living situation, I think it's time to face that surgery.” Do you know why? Just as he did for those disciples, he is with them! He's always with us! And that's what we celebrate today. His spirit, his presence is with us. Folks, pray for the holy spirit. The Lord gave the holy spirit to each and every one of us so that we don't remain in the darkness and in those moments of doubt, but he sends us forth and he gives us the courage to go forth and to touch the lives of those around us. I know I’ve been an encouraging voice for many sometimes. It's going to be ok yes, it's going to be different but it's going to be ok. And you know when you receive an encouraging voice whether that's to make that move to a new place or to embrace a surgery or a new job the Lord gives us that courage to do so. Thank God for the holy spirit and embrace that holy spirit today.
