No doubt about it, dirt bike wheelies are cool, especially those slow ones where the rider covers the rear brake and brings the bike to a temporary stand still. Push down on the bars to compress the suspension for good wheelie technique. Usually when the bike goes past the balance point our instinct is to jump off, no matter how much you tell yourself to cover the rear brake. Pop the clutch to bring the front wheel up, and hopefully without too much speed. When Graham Jarvis ..... dropped into our neighbourhood, we got very motivated and thought we'd learn how to wheelie dirt bikes sitting down and Jarvis-style. At times the bike will therefore turn to the left but you can usually just ride this through. You can take your left leg off to help balance the bike if needed. Well that's as far as we've got, we'll look at more advanced aspects if and when we learn how to do dirt bike wheelies better. First get used to the toe drag wheelie on a smooth uphill slope. Now we have to admit these don't have a lot of direction application to riding and these dirt bike wheelies are mostly for pose value only. Sit to the rear of the bike. When it all goes wrong you should be able to just step off the bike and ease it down, although it can be harder with shorter legs. If you don't compress the suspension, you can see here how the bike gets too much speed. Ideally you want to get the bike to the balance point almost immediately. However, learning how to wheelie will help to greatly increase your sense of balance, find the balancing point of your bike, make covering the rear brake instinctive and hone your clutch and throttle skills. As always, learning how to wheelie a dirt bike is way easier to learn on a trials bike first if you happen to have one. Learning to cover the rear brake is critical for safer wheelies - ideally you should practice this separately as it takes a long time for it to become second nature. Practice until it becomes instinctive. Now you can start working toward getting both feet on the footpegs. The idea is always keep your right foot in place to cover the rear brake. Cover the rear brake too! It's best to learn how to wheelie a dirt bike in stages. At first the important thing is to get the front wheel up without gaining too much speed, and finding out where the balance point is when learning how to wheelie a motorbike. The next step in learning how to wheelie a dirt bike sitting down is keeping your rear foot up to cover the rear brake. Keep your left leg down and out for balance.
