Many Rivers To Cross | Jahméne

My heart is so heavy and broken. I can’t believe we continue to be in this space where racism not only continues to exist but thrives.

A lot of pain has been hitting me in waves from remembering all those who’ve been brutally and unashamedly murdered, the savagery inflicted within black history and from my own personal traumas … from being attacked by people with bricks, stones, fireworks, words ... to a scarily long list of racist abuse in its many many forms that’s all mentally resurfacing for me.

It’s because of racism that I know the fear of simply stepping outside, not knowing what abuse I would endure that day. It’s because of racism I know the feeling of being guilty before proven innocent. It has never been okay to feel like any of this is normal; like that’s just the way it is and is going to be. It’s because of racism that I know what it’s like to be forced into silence about my suffering out of fear that I’d become the problem.

Whenever we react or speak up we are made to be the problem in order to justify the imbalance, the killing, stealing and the destruction of our communities across the world.

We can’t force racists to stop being ignorant. They need to educate themselves as it’s not our responsibility to school them in how to not be racist. We’ve had enough of hiding our hurt to make them comfortable, we can’t afford to wait for racists to catch up and we can’t tolerate any of it any further. They’ve already taken more than enough. It’s because of racism we’ve given everything we have as a collective throughout history and that’s why the only thing left for them to take is our lives and that is where we draw the line.
