A 70-YEAR-OLD man was left bleeding with a black eye, suspected fractured eye socket and chipped tooth after being attacked by a young female at a Nerang shopping centre.

Horrified shoppers were forced to step in and stop the brutal assault as the woman and a male partner punched the elderly man repeatedly in the head and body — in front of a young child.

Police are investigating the incident, which happened just after 4pm at the Nerang Mall shopping centre on Tuesday when the woman started verbally abusing Bruce McNair on the footpath outside the Terry White Chemist.

Yesterday the victim's wife Jenny McNair said it was a terrifying attack and her husband was still in pain.

"This kind of attack should never happen to anyone, at any age. No one deserves this," she said. "They are cowards."

Mrs McNair said she was frightened for the safety of her family after the woman threatened her family.

"My stomach is churning. I can't stop shaking," she said.

"I'm just so upset by all of this.

"I'm frightened for all our safety. She has threatened us before.

"This woman is a loose cannon, and my husband — we've been married for 45 years — he doesn't deserve this.

"He's a good bloke, he's such a good man.

"He deserves much better than the garbage we have had to deal with because of her."

Late yesterday afternoon, Mr McNair was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for a suspected fractured eye socket.

Police have confirmed the female attacker is related to the victim and she is likely to face serious charges over the incident.

Witness Craig Jones said the woman was screaming at the man before she punched him.

"She just started throwing punches," he said.

"Then her partner stepped in, punched him in the stomach and then hit him with a left uppercut."

The couple unleashed a flurry of punches with the elderly man unable to defend himself against the ferocious attack. Stunned shoppers were screaming as centre staff and witnesses stepped in to stop the attack.

Mr Jones said the attack happened in front of terrified children.

"It was 4 o'clock, so there were kids and families everywhere," he said. "The couple even had a young child with them who was screaming during the attack."

He said people were screaming at the couple, begging them to stop the attack.

The couple fled in a car with NSW plates as the crowd turned against them with the woman screaming at onlookers "you have no (expletive) idea".

The elderly man was covered in blood — with a cut to his forehead, a bruised eye and a chipped tooth.

"There was blood everywhere — it was dripping down his face and splattered all over the floor," Mr Jones said.

"I was shocked. This just shouldn't happen.

"That's my local shopping centre and this sort of thing just shouldn't happen."

He was treated in the mall's medical centre before being taken to hospital yesterday.

Video of the attack has been handed to police and the assault is under investigation.
