American Bandstand – January 7, 1967 FULL EPISODE PART 2 -Neil Diamond, The Electric Prunes
Sorry I had to break this up into 2 parts. If the video goes over 30 minutes, all of the songs get blocked (???)
Anyways, today’s episode has the infamous “Rango” Rate-A-Record. This was often cited by Dick Clark (and others) as one of, if not the most, difficult and strangest songs ever played on Rate-A-Record. Our own Don Sanuskar, along with Deedra Higgins, had the happy task of dancing on the riser during this classic AB moment. (Well done Don!) I’m not too surprised they played Frankie Laine’s song, as promoting other ABC shows was fairly common on Bandstand, but I am surprised at how high it was rated at 82 ½?!? June Strode even thought it might become a hit!
Today’s episode also has a nice mix of the great music of the mid 60’s including Motown, British Invasion, Psychedelic, and American pop. Watch for Dick Clark to, sort of, dance along at his podium to “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron”.
In Part 2:Neil Diamond singing “Solitary Man” is one of my favorite AB guest appearances….good call Roni Menacker. When Neil was singing “You Got To Me”, I wonder if Frank Vanderpuil was thinking “hey, that’d be a good song to swing dance to”. He and Judy Michaud will win the ’67 Swing Dance Contest 4 months later, dancing to this song.
“Rango” ran for 17 episodes in the Winter and Spring of ’67. It looks pretty funny, (despite the politically incorrect Pinkcloud, yikes) Did anyone watch it?
In the Billboard Hot 100 today:
1) I’m A Believer – The Monkees
2) Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron – The Royal Guardsmen
3) Tell It Like It Is - Aaron Neville
4) Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band
5) Sugar Town - Nancy Sinatra
7) Good Thing – Paul Revere & the Raiders
8) Words of Love – The Mamas and the Papas
28) Color My World – Petula Clark
40) Mame – Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
47) I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) – The Electric Prunes
88) It Takes Two – Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston (new on the charts this week)
While the ’21 new year here in the U.S. is off to an “eventful” start, I hope YOUR new year has been, and continues to be, much more riot and Covid free. Here’s to a better rest-of-2021!
Thank you for watching and thank you for all of your comments. Even when I haven’t posted anything, I still get about 30-40 comments a day and I read them all (for better or for worse, lol).
