Video games have a long history, blossoming way back in the day, possibly medieval times, and steadily growing ever since. By the 1970s, we were treated to the first home game consoles, such as the Magnavox Odyssey, the Fairchild Channel F, and the Intellivision. These three consoles were the first awkward steps towards the controllers we know today, covered in wood paneling, horrible ergonomics, and either way too many, or way too little buttons. By the 1980's, we began to see solid progress being made on the usability front, with consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Master System. These classic systems duked it out in some of the very first console wars, whose rivalry helped propel gaming into the mainstream, as well as launching some of the world's most iconic franchises: Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and many more. Retro home consoles and their controllers had a rocky start, but they will forever be remembered fondly for helping establish this explosively popular medium.
