Stellan Skarsgård admitted he chose full makeup for Pirates of the Caribbean; spending six hours in
Actor Stellan Skarsgård, who played "Bootstrap Bill" Turner in the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean films (Dead Man's Chest and At World's End), had one of the most complex and heavily designed looks, as his character was transformed into an encrusted, barnacle-covered member of Davy Jones's crew.
Skarsgård reportedly admitted he chose to wear full prosthetic makeup for the character's physical transformation, even for parts that could have been achieved or enhanced with computer-generated imagery (CGI).
The level of detail required for the character meant that Skarsgård spent up to six hours in the makeup chair each day. His reported reasoning was quite personal: he simply liked watching the artists physically paint and create the character on his face and body. This process allowed him to connect with the character's appearance in a tangible way that motion-capture or purely digital effects might not have afforded him.
While many of his fellow actors, particularly those playing the more overtly CGI creatures like Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), relied on motion-capture suits, Skarsgård embraced the traditional art of prosthetics.
