Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram Vice President of Product Tessa Lyons have confirmed the rollout of a new experience designed to bring the platform's short-form video content to living rooms.
• Product Name: The new feature/app is called Instagram for TV.
• Content Focus: The app is specifically designed to prioritize and feature Instagram Reels. It is a direct move to compete with rivals like TikTok and YouTube, which already have TV apps.
• Initial Launch: The testing phase is starting exclusively on Amazon Fire TV streaming devices in the United States. Meta has confirmed plans to expand the TV app to other device makers later.
• Viewing Experience:
• Format: Reels will remain vertical videos, not reformatted to fit the entire horizontal TV screen.
• Content: The app will focus on short-form content, strictly showing Reels three minutes or less in length.
• Channels: Users will be able to browse selections of Reels organized into interest-based channels (e.g., sports, music, travel).
• Multiple Accounts: Users can add up to five individual Instagram accounts to the single shared TV app, allowing for personalized Reels recommendations for everyone in the household.
The current focus is on creating a "great experience" for users in 2026, with monetization (ads) being considered further down the line.
