#SimpleMinds #TheBreakfastClub #80s

Simple Minds is the all time biggest selling band from Scotland, but despite their rich discography, spanning over 40 years of artistry, and their plethora of hits including “Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Waterfront, Promised You A Miracle, All the Things She Said, and so many more as well as all of their international success, they simply do not receive the recognition that they deserve. They’ve been recording material consistently from 1978 into the first two decades of the 21st century. Vocalist Jim Kerr is always in the conversation when talking about the greatest frontman of the 80s. Here we celebrate their impact and tell the story behind some of their biggest hits including a Simple Minds top five.
Simple Minds are one of those acts that had great international success, but were relatively unnoticed in the U.S for many years. In fact, the first 6 albums released by Simple Minds from ’79 through ’84 cracked the Top 40 on the national album chart in the UK, but had no impact in America. It wasn’t until they had a huge #1 soundtrack hit with “Don’t You Forget About Me" in ’85 from the iconic movie The Breakfast Club, that Simple Minds finally received their rightful superstar spotlight in the states.
The real breakthrough LP in the U.S. was not achieved until studio album #7- Once Upon a Time, dropping in ’85.
Simple Minds was founded by childhood buddies Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill who have known each other since they were 8 years old, and have been the twin engine force behind Simple Minds from the band’s formation in Glasgow in 1977.
Simple Minds released their first album Life In a Day in ’79, which featured their debut single- the album’s title track.
#5- “Sanctify Yourself” from 1986
The 2nd single released from Simple Minds aforementioned 7th studio album Once Upon a Time:The track climbed to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #10 in the UK. It was co-written by Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchill, and Mick MacNeil.
#4- From 1984...“Waterfront”
“Waterfront” is one of the standout tracks from the stellar album Sparkle in the Rain, produced by Steve Lillywhite.
Rising to #13 in the UK, #5 in Ireland, and perched at #1 for two weeks in New Zealand.
“Waterfront” sucks you in immediately with its throbbing bass intro created by Derek Forbes. (Insert the beginning of the song here).

#3- The new-romantic flavored dance track “Promised You a Miracle” off the 1982 album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84).
“Promised You a Miracle features an infectious combination of rhythmic electronic keyboards, a funky bass line, and melodic rock guitar riffs.
#2- “Alive and Kicking” from Once Upon a Time. The 2nd biggest hit for Simple Minds. It went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in ’85, and a #1 U.S. Mainstream Rock track.
It was a #7 hit in the UK, and broke the Top 5 in many other European countries, including Italy, where it shot to #1.
#1- “Don’t You Forget About Me”

The brilliantly placed anthem for the euphoric ending of the 1985 pop culture movie classic The Breakfast Club.
It’s hard to imagine that one of the most universally loved songs was met with huge resistance, and struggled to get recorded, but that is exactly what happened with “Don’t You Forget About Me”.
The song was written by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, and originally offered to Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol- who both passed on it.Simple Minds, too, was reluctant to record it.
They met Keith Forsey backstage after one of their U.S. gigs, and had no idea who he was, or any knowledge of his impressive credentials.
By ’85, Forsey had already written a #1 pop song for a film- “Flashdance/ What a Feeling” for Flashdance performed by Irene Cara, and he’d co-written “The Heat is On” for another major film Beverly Hills Cop performed by Glenn Frey, in addition to pivotal involvement in the making of many other hit records.
The instincts of Keith Forsey and John Hughes had that Simple Minds was the perfect band to interpret “Don’t You Forget About Me” were spot on.
“Don’t You Forget About Me” is not only #1 on my Simple Minds FIVER, but probably my #1 favorite song from a movie soundtrack.
