Dark Photos : The WW2 Warship Disguised as an Island

This 1942 photo captures what looks like a small island. Upon closer inspection, however, one can make out the lines of a naval ship. The vessel is the Dutch minesweeper HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen, trapped following the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies. The ship had been left behind its battle group to fend for itself, and it was nearly defenseless against the threat of aerial attack. With orders to withdraw to Australia, the Abraham Crijnssen's crew realized their only hope would be to stay as hidden from Japanese reconnaissance as they made their great escape...
