The Norwegian Incident that Almost Triggered Nuclear War

Since the successful development of the first atom bomb in 1945, the world has had to endure the looming possibility of nuclear destruction on a number of occasions - some more secret and recent than governments would like their people to know.

As more world powers gained the ability to produce nuclear weapons, the number of events where a nuclear war was nearly caused by human mistakes has increased dramatically.
The Pentagon officially identifies 33 near-apocalyptic events, but many historians estimate the number to be much higher than that.

Most of these episodes happened during the Cold War, when tensions between the US and Russia were so high that the term Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD, was coined to describe the possible outcome of a confrontation.

However, the time when the world came closest to a Nuclear Armageddon wasn't when President Richard Nixon drunkenly ordered a nuclear attack on North Korea, or during the Suez Crisis. Not even the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962 can take the title.

The closest time the world has come to Mutually Assured Destruction may have been on a clear winter morning on January 25, 1995, six years after the Cold War had ended, when the Russian Ministry of Defense mistook a research rocket launched by scientists in Norway for a US nuclear missile attack.

The entire Russian war machine immediately prepared for a counterattack while simultaneously tracking the rocket and searching for any indications that it might be something other than a nuclear warhead.

Still, time and time again, the incoming missile's trajectory, size, and behavior gave all the signs that it was a nuclear first strike.

Protocol indicated that the Russian military had only 10 minutes to deploy a response in case of a nuclear attack or they would be destroyed. Then, with that colossal pressure over his shoulders, Russian President Boris Yeltsin became the first leader in the history of the world to activate his Nuclear Briefcase.

Now, all he had to do was press a button, and hell would be unleashed on Earth.
