Turning a square bowl out of sycamore wood - woodturning

In this video I demonstrate my usual process for turning a square (or square-ish) bowl. Square bowls can be intimidating, but they're not terribly difficult once you get the hang of it. The bowl I turn in this video is a decent size -- each side is between 8"-9" but the diagonal is 12", so it's like turning a 12" bowl. Often, the hardest part is the vibration of the corners which can cause some tool marks, but I show a simple way to get rid of those during sanding. There are plenty of other ways to mount a square blank and turn it into a square bowl, so you just have to find what you're comfortable with and what your equipment will allow. Starting with a much smaller bowl is always a good idea. Generally, all of my "square" bowls are really not square -- they're asymmetrical. I like the randomness of the angles, lengths of the sides, and heights of the corners. Sometimes I even leave the chainsaw marks on the edges, but on this one I decided to sand them away. I hope you enjoy the video.
