What It Feels Like To Lead an Olympic Marathon, with Dakotah Popehn

At the Paris Olympics, Dakotah Popehn (Lindwurm) got dropped on the long climb toward Versailles. The move went. The pack stretched. She was off the back. There was no panic. Just work.

She kept grinding up the hill, steady and patient, telling herself she would reconnect when the road allowed it. By the time she reached Versailles, she had worked her way back. Then she turned the corner and looked around.

No one was there.

She was leading the Olympic marathon in front of one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, and for a brief moment, it was just her and the road... on the biggest stage in the world.

Down the course, her family erupted. They were screaming so loudly that nearby spectators thought something had gone terribly wrong. Nothing had. Their daughter was at the front of the Olympic marathon living out her dreams.

Those are the seconds athletes carry with them forever.
