সময়টা ১৯০৫, ব্রিটিশ-ভারতের গভর্নর জেনারেল জর্জ কার্জন এমন একটি সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়, যেটা পরবর্তীতে বহু রক্তাক্ত ঘটনার জন্ম দিয়েছিলো। আর সেটা হলো বঙ্গভঙ্গ। যদিও ১৯১১ সালে বঙ্গভঙ্গ রদ করা হয়, তবে এর প্রভাব ছিলো সুদূর প্রসারী। বাংলার সমাজ, ধর্ম, অর্থনীতি, রাজনীতি সর্বক্ষেত্রেই এই পার্টিশন আজও প্রভাব রেখে চলছে। বাংলায় সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতি পরিণত হয় দাঙ্গা-হাঙ্গামায়।

ব্রিটিশ শাসকবর্গের দাবি অনুযায়ী বঙ্গভঙ্গ ছিলো প্রসাশনিক সুবিধার জন্য। কিন্তু অনেক ঐতিহাসিকের মতে এটা ছিলো তাদের রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থে বাংলাকে দূর্বল করার পদক্ষেপ।
