2022 Sprowls Lecture by Dr. Charles Ruchalski, Clinical Professor
Temple University School of Pharmacy Clinical Professor Charles Ruchalski, PharmD ’99, BSPharm ’95 has been named the 2022 Sprowls Lecture awardee by the Alumni Association. The lecture was held on Monday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m.
Since completing a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Temple University Hospital in 1999, Dr. Ruchalski has been a key Clinical Faculty member. He serves as the Faculty Advisor for Temple’s American Pharmacists Association student chapter. In 2007, he was recognized for his excellence in teaching with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year award, which is based on student evaluations. Temple University honored Dr. Ruchalski with an Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 2014 based on his community outreach leadership in North Philadelphia, working to reduce rates of HIV and hepatitis C virus transmission.
Since 2012, Dr. Ruchalksi has led students and fellow faculty members on a Vietnam Pharmacy/Medical Mission program that treats underserved patients who have little to no access to pharmacy and medical services. To date, his teams have treated over 35,000 patients with acute and chronic medical issues and assisted with the fitting of over 5,000 prosthetic limbs to patients suffering post-war injuries, trauma, and complications from chronic disease states. He has generated more than $100,000 for the program and, in 2018, his team was recognized by the Prime Minister of Vietnam with the highest honor given to a Non-Governmental Organization for its charity work efforts in Vietnam.
Currently, Dr. Ruchalski is the COVID-19 pandemic faculty leader and has administered over 7,000 COVID-19 vaccines to residents of the Greater Philadelphia Area. He is the School of Pharmacy’s delegate partnered with colleagues from Temple’s College of Public Health on a grant-funded program to decrease vaccine hesitancy and immunize the North Philadelphia community. For this work, he was recognized by Temple as a “Faculty Hero.”
The Sprowls Lecture honors Dean Joseph B. Sprowls (served 1950–1967) for his many contributions to our school, university, and profession. The School of Pharmacy and the Alumni Association present the Sprowls Lecture Award annually to an outstanding individual who has achieved recognition within pharmacy for significant contributions to the profession as a distinguished practitioner, scientist or educator.
