The Invisible Atmospheres of Galaxies - Iryna Butsky - 12/02/2022
Galaxies are dynamic, evolving objects consisting of stars, gas, and dark matter, and are as diverse as the people on this planet. Galactic atmospheres (referred to as the circumgalactic medium) are key to understanding galaxy evolution, and perhaps, our own existence in the Milky Way. Join us for a 30-minute lecture on the galaxies and their invisible atmospheres, followed by a panel Q&A consisting of several astrophysicists to answer your questions about space science. Dr. Iryna Butsky is a computational astrophysicist specializing in galaxies and their atmospheres. She received her BS in Astrophysics from Caltech and her PhD in Astronomy from the University of Washington before returning to Caltech as a DuBridge Postdoctoral Fellow. In her spare time, Iryna likes to spend time in the mountains and bake bread. www.irynabutsky.me
Abstract:
Galaxies are dynamic, evolving objects consisting of stars, gas, and dark matter, and are as diverse as the people on this planet. In order to understand why galaxies look the way they do and why some die (stop forming new stars) while others thrive, it is important to understand the environment in which they live. In this lecture, I will discuss how galactic atmospheres (referred to as the circumgalactic medium) are key to understanding galaxy evolution, and perhaps, our own existence in the Milky Way. I will highlight recent observations, taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, that challenge existing theoretical models and discuss possible solutions from recent research.
