How to Make a Skater Dress Easy! | DIY Dress Sewing Tutorial | Sewing Projects for Beginners

Learn how to make a dress without a pattern in my latest sewing tutorial! This DIY skater dress is the perfect sewing project for beginners because it has a simple shape and it’s made with stretch knit fabric so it’s easy to get a great fit without needing a zipper or darts. I give you lots of tips for how to sew with stretchy fabric so you can be confident making this easy skater dress. I loved it so much I made two!

FABRIC INFO & RECOMMENDATIONS:

The fabric I used for the red floral dress in the intro is a Liverpool Knit (contents 96% polyester 4% spandex. Width: 58-60”). It’s a medium weight fabric that has a little texture to it.

The fabric I used for the multicolored dress in the tutorial is ITY Knit (contents: 96: polyester 4% spandex. Width: 58”). ITY knit is a lightweight fabric that feels super smooth and even a little slippery.
WHAT FABRIC DO I RECOMMEND FOR BEGINNERS?

The Liverpool Knit fabric is the type of fabric I would HIGHLY recommend for beginners to make this dress out of! If you’re new to sewing with knits, the Liverpool knit’s medium weight and texture made it super easy to sew with and so I think it’d be perfect for anyone starting to learn how to sew stretchy fabric. I love ITY knit too and sew with it often but the Liverpool is definitely the easiest! Lighter weight knit fabrics can be a little more finicky to sew with at times so that’s why I suggest the thicker one.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT:

-FABRIC: 1 ½ - 2 yards of a four way stretch knit fabric – I used 1.5 yards but I’d suggest getting 2 yards to be on the safe side especially if you want a longer skirt or larger size.

-TEMPLATE: A fitted tank top to use as a template – no sewing pattern is needed!
