Constructing her compositions by reflecting hers and other people’s shadows on the canvas, Görkem bases the subject of the exhibition on her ongoing doctoral thesis titled “Questioning Myths and Unconscious Images in the Artist’s Production” at Mimar Sinan FAU. As in the first shadow painting mentioned by Pliny, called skia graphos, which is said to have been drawn by Kore of Sicyon, (the daughter of Butades), Görkem associates these shadows with the concept of shadow self from Carl Jung. Jung defines this as the parts of the psyche that one ignores or cannot bear to see, and that remain in the dark, and says that unless we come to an agreement, it will be continuously reflected to us from other people or events.
These shadows reflected on the surface, on the other hand, become a medium that allows us to see the artist’s own personal myths on the canvas during the painting process. Thus, the expression of shadows in both individual and social sense, embracing our own other side, takes place on the artistic level. Especially the shadow series in the exhibition of “Antihero: The Artist’s Journey” focuses on the hero’s journey and monomythic cycles of a hero such as the annunciation, the belly of the whale, atonement, and alchimical stages of the soul as descibed in hermetic literature.

Kompozisyonlarını, kendi ve başkalarının gölgelerini tuvale yansıtarak oluşturan Görkem, serginin konusunu, Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi’ndeki doktora tezi olan “Sanatçının Üretiminde Mitlerin ve Bilinçdışı İmgelerin Sorgulanması” başlığına dayandırıyor. Plinius tarafından bahsedilen ve Butades’in kızı Sicyonlu Kore’nin çizdiği söylenen ilk gölge resim olan skia graphos gibi, Görkem bu gölgeleri Carl Jung’un gölge benlik kavramı ile ilişkilendiriyor. Jung, gölge benliği, insanın görmezden geldiği ya da yüzleşmeye cesaret edemediği ve karanlıkta kalan psişik parçalar olarak tanımlar ve bu parçalarla uzlaşılmadığı takdirde, sürekli diğer insanlar veya olaylar aracılığıyla bize yansıtılacağını söyler.
Yüzeye yansıtılan bu gölgeler ise, sanatçının resim yapma sürecinde kendi kişisel mitlerini tuvalde görmesini sağlayan bir araca dönüşür. Böylece, bireysel ve toplumsal anlamda gölgelerin ifadesi ve kendi öteki yanımızı kucaklama süreci, sanatsal bir düzlemde yer bulur. Özellikle “Antikahraman: Sanatçının Yolculuğu” sergisindeki gölge serisi, kahramanın yolculuğu ve çağrı, balinanın karnı, kefaret ve hermetik literatürde tarif edilen ruhun simyasal aşamaları gibi monomitik döngülere odaklanır.
