The King's Balance in Hampi is an ancient structure located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, Karnataka, India. It is a balance scale used by the Vijayanagara Empire to weigh the king against gold, jewels, or grains, which were then distributed to the needy on special occasions such as festivals or coronations. This symbolic act represented the king's duty to ensure justice and welfare for his people. The balance consists of two granite pillars with a horizontal stone beam suspended between them, upon which the valuables were placed. The structure stands as a testament to the administrative and social systems of the Vijayanagara Empire, which flourished during the 14th to 16th centuries. The King’s Balance in Hampi, a rare and ancient balance scale, stands proudly to the southwest of the Vittala Temple, marking the end of the Kampa Bhupa’s Path. Known alternately as Tula Bhara or Tula Purushadana, this remarkable structure draws throngs of visitors, captivated by its rich history and remarkably preserved architecture. Its origins date back to the 15th century, steeped in a tale as intriguing as the structure itself. According to lore, the King’s Balance served as a pivotal tool for the kings of the Vijayanagara Empire during momentous occasions: New Year's Day, coronations, eclipses, and the grand Dasara festivals. Here, the king would weigh himself against treasures of gold, silver, gems, and precious jewelry, all to be lavishly distributed among temple priests as a gesture of charitable benevolence. Yet, what truly intrigues is the ceremonial preparations leading up to these grand events. Under the watchful eye of the city council, the royal kitchen would laboriously craft the king's favorite delicacies, all to entice him into indulgence. Fatty foods would be laid before him, and every effort made to discourage physical exertion, all in pursuit of gaining a few precious extra kilograms. The surplus wealth thus accumulated would be bestowed upon the temple priests, ensuring a lavish display of generosity. Furthermore, the balance's utility extended beyond weighing treasures. In an age of agrarian abundance, it served as a tool for measuring grains and pulses, emblematic of the intricate societal structures that flourished amidst the grandeur of ancient Hampi. Carved from massive stone, the King’s Balance in Hampi stands as a formidable monument. It comprises two imposing granite pillars, each soaring to a height of 15 feet, supporting a stout stone beam spanning 12 feet. Beneath the beam hang three sturdy hoops, once utilized to suspend the balance. Remarkably, one of the pillars bears intricate carvings depicting the king and his two queens, adding a touch of royal splendor to the structure. Rising like a grand archway, the monument commands attention near the Vittala temple, serving as a tangible link to the glory days of the Vijayanagara Empire. Though devoid of its original balance apparatus, the structure remains an enduring symbol of a bygone era.Standing approximately 5 meters tall, this 'balance', also known as Tula Bhara or Tula Purushadana, held profound significance during special ceremonial occasions, including solar or lunar eclipses. It is said that the king would weigh himself against treasures of gold, gems, silver, and precious stones before distributing them among temple priests.A series of loops adorns the top of the balance, a reminder of its former functionality. Additionally, one of the pillars boasts a masterful carving portraying the king and his consorts, enriching the historical narrative encapsulated within this architectural marvel.
