Dream Defender Protest Closes Sanford Police Department April 9th 2012

Activists Dream Defenders blocked the entrance of the Sanford Police Department on April 9th, 2012 in Sanford, Florida as a protest calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman, the shooter of Trayvon Martin who suffered a fatal gun shot wound from the incident earlier this year. This shut down the police department for the day and all personnel we sent home.

A press conference was held at 2:30pm with local media. Sanford locals were outraged by the Dream Defenders because they have been marching and protesting for weeks with no such results when all the Dream Defenders (mostly from out of city and state student activists) had to do was take a seat on the floor blocking the entrances of the building for a few hours.

Byron Cole, the National Director of New Orleans based activist group "Fathers Advocacy" also spoke out during (before and after) the press conference about how this is all posturing and nothing but bureaucracy. The protest did not achieve the goal of arresting George Zimmerman but it did shut down the police station for the day and establish a meeting with city servants and locals next Thursday, April 19th, 2012 to discuss the next steps to healing the community.
