Assange Confronts Gillard on ABC's Q&A

Appearing via Internet on ABC's Q&A program, Julian Assange surprised Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, asking her about allegations of inquiries by the ASIO into himself and other WikiLeaks staff, and that information being provided to the U.S. in response to requests through intelligence liaison channels.

Gillard also had an interesting response to the next question asked to her, which was whether she would guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to the U.S. if faced with the death penalty. She said:

"Policy wise, we do not extradite people who could be subject to the death penalty. It's not a question of Mr. Assange or not Mr. Assange, that's Australian policy. We just don't."
