Mount Hermon | Israel video tour

With David Hyman, professional tour guide. Mount Hermon is the highest mountain in Israel and the most northern point in the country. Israel controls only 7% of the area of the mountain, while the remaining 93% are shared between Lebanon and Syria. On the final hours of the 1967 "Six-Day War," the Israeli army landed soldiers on the south summit of the mountain, and established an army post that is nicknamed "The eyes of the nation".
Israel's Mount Hermon outpost was attacked by Syria during the 1973 Yom Kippur war and was in Syrian hands for 3 weeks until it was gained back by Golani troops with a fierce battle with many casualties. Mt Hermon is a unique environment in Israel due to the high elevation and the northern location. The Mountain is snowcapped for about 4 months each year and Israel's only Ski resort is located on the eastern slopes. Hermon is mentioned in the Bible many times as the northern boundary of the promised land, and also appears in the book of Psalms (133) in one of the songs of ascent. High mountains were always a popular site of worship in the ancient world, and many shrines and temples were discovered around the base of Hermon, including the Temple of Pan at the Banias springs. A stone Temple was discovered on the summit of the mountain by Captain Charles Warren in 1869 and he revealed a stone inscription dedicated to "The gods of the mountain" The inscription is in the British Museum. The mountain is made of Limestone from the Jurassic age, about 300 million years old, the limestone reacts to the acidity of the rainwater and dissolves as part of a phenomenon called Karst. The mountain behaves like a giant sponge, absorbing the rainwater and the snowmelt. the water emerges from the base of the mountain in many springs including three on the Israeli side: Banias, Dan, and Snir.
