USF Jewish Studies and Social Justice Program
Eighth Annual Social Justice Lecture
With Rabbi Jill Jacobs
In conversation with Rabbi Michael Lezak
As Executive Director of T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, Rabbi Jill Jacobs is at the vanguard of the Jewish human rights movement, mobilizing 1,800 rabbis and cantors, as well as tens of thousands of American Jews, to protect human rights in North America, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Widely regarded as a leading voice on Jewish social justice, she is the author of Where Justice Dwells: A Hands-On Guide to Doing Social Justice in Your Jewish Community and There Shall Be No Needy: Pursuing Social Justice through Jewish Law & Tradition, and has been named three times to the Forward’s list of 50 influential American Jews and to Newsweek’s list of 50 Most Influential Rabbis in America every year since 2009. Rabbi Jacobs appears in conversation with Rabbi Michael Lezak, staff rabbi at the Glide Center for Social Justice of Glide Memorial Church and Foundation.
"The very first thing the Torah teaches us about human beings is that we're all created in the image of God. And, per midrash, anyone who spills blood diminishes the divine presence. It's unacceptable that the people charged with protecting us sometimes act as though the lives of certain people – most often those of color – are insignificant."
– Rabbi Jill Jacobs
