Anabel Hernández on journalist safety in Mexico

In undertaking the research to identify how many journalists had lost their lives during the 12 month period covered by this year's Courage in Journalism Award, we found a total of 55 journalists who had been killed as a direct result of their work.

The research emphasised how dangerous a place Mexico is to be a journalist, with 12 journalists killed between October 2018 and October 2019. It is extremely worrying that the majority of these killings have not been investigated and it seems unlikely that justice will be brought, with levels of impunity continuing to rise.

We recently interviewed Anabel Hernández, a Mexican journalist and author, who has received numerous death threats since writing about the alleged collusion between government officials in Mexico and the drug lords, and has therefore been forced to go into exile. In this interview, Anabel emphasises the extreme conditions faced by many journalists around the world.
