The 2021 Courage in Journalism Award Ceremony - The Legatum Institute

This year we held the 2021 Courage in Journalism Award Ceremony online. The event was a chance to raise awareness of declining press freedoms worldwide, and to recognise and honour the legacy of journalists around the world who pay the ultimate price in their commitment to free and fair reporting.

We were honoured to welcome several guest speakers to the Award Ceremony, including: Paul Caruana Galizia, who touched on the impact of the dealth of his mother, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, and the legacy that she leaves; Abeer Saady of the Ethical Journalism Network and the BBC’s World Affairs Correspondent Mike Thomson, who considered the current state of press freedom around the world and what it is like working as a journalist in some of the most dangerous countries; and Lord David Freud and ARTICLE 19’S Pedro Cardenas, who discussed journalist safety and media freedom in Mexico.
