"It's clear that there is more (to the festival) than drums, there are musical bands from all over the world. I can see troupes from Africa and others from Latin America as well as bands from Asia. I'm expecting a beautiful show. Egypt has always been a meeting point for cultures, so it is not unusual for all these bands to come and gather here today."

"It is a very beautiful feeling because it is the first time for me to come from Tunisia, and also because the festival is very important as it brings many countries from all over the world together to present their folklore and traditional arts."

"There are participants from around 11 countries. Some of them travelled from their countries and other (countries) are being represented through their embassies. There are very special participants from Mexico, Spain, Jordan, Sudan, South Sudan and Bangladesh. There are many countries participating, in addition to the distinguished Egyptian bands taking part in the festival."

The sound of the beating of drums filled the air at the Cairo Citadel, where the 9th International Festival for Drums and Traditional Arts kicked off.
STORYLINE:
Cairo's drum festival opened on Saturday and is bringing together 43 folkloric troupes from various countries to regale the crowds attending the shows.
The opening ceremony of the 9th annual International Festival for Drums and Traditional Arts took place at the picturesque Cairo Citadel.
The festival this year features troupes from several countries, including Tunisia, Bangladesh, Spain and South Sudan as well as performers from all over Egypt.
"I see this as a dialogue between cultures from all over the world through the costumes, the beats of the drums," said Iman Mostafa, who attended the show on Saturday.
Some of the bands performing at the shows have come a long way to take part in the festival, which runs until May 28.
Performers like Shaimaa al-Ouni from Tunisia see the event as a chance for artists from around the world to show their traditional arts.
The festival originally started in 2009 with the aim of sending a message of peace through spiritual music.
It focused on drums because they were originally used during wars, so the founder say they wanted to take an instrument that was originally used for war-like purposes to invoke a combination of art and peace.
