Faculty Student Solidarity Encampment at The New School in New York City.

"A second building, The Lama Jamous Center, previously the Welcome Center at @thenewschool where prospective students first go for their tour of this so-called “progressive” institution, was occupied this week by faculty, students and alum. One of the biggest forms of escalation in the country was done by faculty and students working together—19 year olds and 65 year olds taking over the building together, and it's been beautiful! This historic encampment is happening right here in New York, and the students and faculty at the not one but TWO encampments are calling on everyone to spread the word and show up!! This moment is CRITICAL and the more support, the more pressure there is on the university to divest from all ties to Israel and the arms/weapon industry/fossil fuel industry.

Last night, @thenewschool did a sweep of one of the encampments, taking many essential items and personal belongings as a meeting was held in another building. This is not how you treat your tuition paying students, your hard working faculty, many of whom are severely underpaid and working in exploitative adjunct positions. "Around midnight on Saturday, May 18th, (2024), The New School Security dismantled and swept the Refaat Alareer Faculty Student Solidarity Encampment at the University Center at 63 West 5th Avenue. New School security workers locked all entrances while the school’s maintenance team removed all tents, posters, supplies, and other encampment components from the space. Community members are now without essential items, which were removed without prior notice or consent. No arrests were made and the NYPD was not involved in the raid.
