Hampshire Accents & Dialect - From the Very Traditional to Today

Today we are looking at the very traditional British accent called the Hampshire accent, but not to be taken to seriously mind you. This is an accent which is really not heard or spoken nowadays but was heard in the county a long time ago (maybe hundreds of years ago). If you are not sure btw - Hampshire is a county in England. It's quite a large county, and you could say is the transition county from the south east to the south west. Fyi, I was not born in Hampshire but lived there for about 10 years and my regular accent is not very Hampshire. However, I like to make videos about the quirky nature of accents, so you might not have heard any of the features in this video before.

I analyse the traditional Hampshire accent and work through two features of how the consonant sounds are said. There is a key in the video as to how I explain the sounds - it's tricky working out how to annotate old accents sometimes! Plus, I give you some vocabulary that also featured in their dialect and, and give you a few facts about Hampshire, like some important towns, this'll be especially useful if you don't know the area.

Now, I have already done videos on the Kent and Sussex accents so you could watch them as well to compare - links below. Kent is right next to Sussex and Sussex next to Hampshire, so my idea is to work through as many counties as possible.

So, finally, discover how you can use a few simple techniques to master the Hampshire accent and get ready to understand and appreciate this traditional accent like never before!

Quick note: the sounds are estimated due to lack of phonetics for some of the words I am describing.

Btw - I'm not trying to replicate how modern day Hampshire people speak - but having a historic angle as to how they might have spoken - purely based on the book 'Glossary of Hampshire Words and Phrases' (link below). It's a bit of lightheartedness and also fun - as you often get with very old accents and dialects.
