Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra - You Go To My Head (Vocalion Records 1938)
"You Go to My Head" is a 1938 popular song composed by J. Fred Coots with lyrics by Haven Gillespie. The song is a unique conjunction of a sophisticated lyric and complex, lush harmonic structure by two songwriters who were not generally known for such elegance; nevertheless the song is highly regarded by jazz musicians and critics alike. The song was first recorded in 1938 by Teddy Wilson with a vocal by Nan Wynn. The same year it was recorded by Billie Holiday. On 23 April 1961, Judy Garland performed the song at the "Judy at Carnegie Hall" concert.
Billie's accompanied by Charlie Shavers, t / Buster Bailey, cl / Babe Russin, ts / Claude Thornhill, p / John Kirby, sb / Cozy Cole, d. Recorded in New York, May 11, 1938. (Vocalion Records)
You go to my head
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea
Casts a spell over me
Still I say to myse
lf "Get ahold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be"
You go to my head with a smile
That makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance
In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head
(bridge)
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance
In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head
